With his dialogues "Critias" and "Timaeos", the Greek philosopher Plato (427-347 A.D.) has left us with a mystery that has not been solved until today: was there such a thing as the legendary island continent Atlantis, and if yes - where was it located?
Magnificent Atlantis is said to have existed "beyond the Pillars of Hercules " in the Atlantic Ocean about 9000 years before Plato's times, and to have been larger than Libya and Asia . Its inhabitants ("Atlanteans") are supposed to have been a highly developed civilisation, which expanded their influence to all Mediterranean peoples and as far as Athens. They knew a material called "Oreichalkos" or "Orichalcum " ('gold copper ore'), which they appreciated most after gold, and which was not even known in Plato's times.
The rulers of Atlantis are said to originally be descendants of the God Poseidon , who, due to their numerous associations with mortals, had lost their godhead: when eagerness for power and greediness got out of hand, Zeus - God of Gods - wanted to chasten them through punishment. Caused by large earthquakes and floods, Atlantis is supposed to have sunken in the sea overnight.
